Welcome back to D.C., Gladiators. After a longer than usual hiatus, Scandal is back and serving up a heavy helping of unscrupulous political intrigue. The happenings in the season six premiere, “Survival of the Fittest” were almost as extraordinary as the mayhem currently going on in D.C. Let’s be honest, it’s fun in fiction but not so much in reality. I digress.
If “Survival of the Fittest” is any indication, season six is going to be a wild ride. We finally learned the results of the presidential election and while the outcome wasn’t necessarily a shock, the fact that Frankie Vargas got shot and killed during his victory speech certainly was. It’s been a tough year for the Democrats.
Frankie’s assassination didn’t mean that Cyrus would automatically become the president elect. Queen Shonda gave viewers a quick high school level crash course in the electoral college and the presidency was once again up for grabs. This was definitely solid logic and had me believing we would have another few episodes before we learned if Cyrus or Mellie would be the new president-elect. In a less reasonable twist, somehow Fitz was empowered to choose between them and serve up his choice to the American people. How did that happen? Whatever, Shonda wrote it, so let it be done.
The “Who Shot Frankie” mystery (or more appropriately “Who Hired the Person to Shoot Frankie”) is sure to be an interesting one and a main plot-point for this season. It seems pretty clear that it was Cyrus, which is why I don’t believe he was involved. Scandal is a tricky little mistress.
When it comes down to it, I’d love to see the tides turn and Mellie come out a winner. She’s such a strong, empowered woman and it frustrates me that she is continuously taking hits. I’m unsure if being president would truly bring her that happiness, but if it would, I want her to have it. Team Mellie.
- Poor Frankie. R.I.P.
- Where was Jake Ballard? An episode lacking Scott Foley is a sin, y’all.
- In the most unromantic, but perfectly “them” way, Quinn and Charlie got engaged!
- I loved the Mellie and Fitz bonding moment on the balcony.
- Abby taking over the hospital floor was so badass. She gave me life.
- I’ll write this on every damn review, fashion, fashion, fashion. Costume Designer, Lyn Paolo slays per usual.
- Scandal is BACK!
