Mellie Grant has been put through it. Over the past several seasons of Scandal she’s been cheated on by her husband, publicly humiliated, raped by her father-in-law, grieved the murder of her son, and now, lost the presidential election. Shonda, have some mercy! In “Fates Worse Than Death” we were treated to flashbacks of the election and the relationship that Mellie was building with Marcus during that time.
The chemistry between Mellie and Marcus was so palpable that Olivia couldn’t help but feel it when she was in the room with them. The stern warning she gave Mellie to keep her legs closed, was a testament to that fact. I’m so glad that Mellie called out the irony of the advice, but when it comes down to it, Olivia was looking out for Mellie’s best interest politically.
There is, however, a marked contrast between what’s good for Mellie’s career and what’s opportune for her personally. From the sidelong glances to the stolen touches, Mellie got a charge out of her flirtation with Marcus. Try as they might, neither seemed capable of keeping their relationship strictly professional. It was telling that as their connection intensified, Mellie became more aware of what Olivia had felt for Fitz. Their situations, though parallel to one another in many ways, are still not the same based on Fitz being married to Mellie at the time he was with Oliva. Still, as Mellie crooned that love had opened her eyes, Olivia had a different view. She knew that she needed to shut the relationship down, so she did what she does best, which is manipulate the situation to render the outcome she desired.
Time will tell if Mellie and Marcus will continue their relationship. With Mellie now tapped to be Cyrus’ Vice President and Marcus as Press Secretary, a pairing between them would be quite scandalous, which would be precisely the point.
- Why is this season so light on Jake Ballard? C’mon now.
- The Hallmark channel music used in the Mellie and Marcus flashbacks. Where’s the soul at?
- I’m loving the mystery of who killed Frankie. Cyrus was pretty convincing to Mellie that Liv was involved.
- The Mellie and Marcus scene on the baseball field was so sexy!
- Olivia’s red poncho.
