Dr. Meredith Grey has always been someone who as a character I’ve loved, but if I knew her in real life she’d drive me crazy. I’m one of those television viewers who is able to love a character even if I don’t like them very much. In fact, I have never understood some people’s desire or need to like a character. Especially if that need causes them to gloss over or make excuses for a character’s negative traits.
With that being said, I too, have found myself ignoring Meredith’s good traits because her bad ones annoy me so much. So basically, none of us are perfect and that’s okay, we don’t have to be. And neither does Meredith. Which is why I love her.
Meredith for all her flaws is a well-rounded, fully fleshed out character. Now, if only I could say the same about Dr. Jo Wilson. Jo feels like a poor man’s Meredith Grey. Harsh, I know, but I stand by it. If she’s been built to be Meredith’s foil Mer is kicking her ass all over the place.
When Jo went off on Meredith in “Odd Man Out” she wasn’t wrong. Meredith was treating her unfairly and taking her anger out on the wrong person and yet I didn’t care. Normally when Meredith is behaving this way it makes me want to pull my hair out, but this time, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for her to lay into Jo. Can you imagine how disappointed I was when that didn’t happen? Although to be fair the unfeeling way Meredith replied, “Are you finished?” was almost just as good. Almost.
I’m not saying Jo deserves to be treated like crap because she doesn’t, but just because she has a lifetime worth of sob stories doesn’t mean we’re obligated to feel bad for her or even root for her. Meredith Grey may have her moments of pure selfishness, of which there are a lot, but she also has those moments when you just know she would die for those she loves. With Jo even when she appears to be your friend you wonder if she really is your friend.
I don’t need to like Jo to enjoy her as a character, but until things change my only thought will be wondering when she will be shown the door.
