Grey’s Anatomy is no stranger to ghosts, in the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, they’re everywhere. Most of them you can’t see, but you always know they’re there. One ghost, in particular, follows Alex Karev everywhere he goes, every relationship he’s in and that would be the ghost of Izzie Stevens. When actress Katherine Heigl left Grey’s Anatomy in season six she forgot to take Izzie Stevens with her or rather we refused to let her go. Season after season fans of both Izzie and the Izzie & Alex pairing have been clamoring for their return.
A return that isn’t going to happen no matter how much viewers may want it or the actress herself might be open to it because once you burn creator Shonda Rhimes you’re burned for life. Depending on who you believe, at the time Heigl left it was amidst rumors that she asked to be let out of her contract early to pursue her film career (we see how well that turned out) or it was because Rhimes was mad about Heigl’s comments about the writing quality of the fourth season. To be fair, I’m betting it was a lot of both. Neither party is innocent. Heigl wasn’t wrong in that the writing for both Izzie Stevens and George O’Malley went way downhill in the fourth season. But she could have chosen a better way of expressing her displeasure. Not to mention
To be fair, I’m betting it was a lot of both. Neither party was the innocent victim or the dastardly villain. Heigl wasn’t wrong in that the writing for both Izzie Stevens and George O’Malley went way downhill in the fourth season. But she could have chosen a better way of expressing her displeasure. Not to mention being so public about it probably wasn’t the best move. Of course, that doesn’t mean she was wrong to say something or that she should have been grateful for whatever she got. And it didn’t do Rhimes any favors to think that she was untouchable from criticism because no one is, especially creators of television shows.
Stevens wasn’t the first major character to leave the show and she sure as hell wasn’t the last, but she has been the one who’s ghost has held on the longest. Neither the show, the viewers, or Alex Karev have been able to let her go but that doesn’t mean they haven’t tried because they have. Hell the writers have all but hit us over the head with how horrible of a person Izzie was for leaving. It’s as though they believe that the worse they make her out to be less we will want her back. Somebody should really tell them that it’s not working.
No matter who they’ve partnered Karev with they haven’t been able to recapture whatever spark he had with Izzie. They’ve tried with Jo and Jo’s nice and all but there’s something missing. I hate to say this, but it feels as though she’s a placeholder until they figure out who they really want to pair him up with. Some are speculating that it could be Meredith which would just be all kinds of wrong. Just the thought of them being paired up skeeves me out. Not to mention Alex Karev deserves better than that. He deserves better than to be the one the other settled for because the person they truly wanted to be with died.
Unfortunately, at this point in the game, there are no easy answers. There are no guarantees that bringing Izzie back will solve anything nor are there any guarantees that the show or Alex will ever be completely free of her either. Grey’s Anatomy and Izzie Stevens, for better or worse, are intricately linked whether we like it or not.
